In Overcharts you can share any drawing on multiple charts of the same instrument. A shared drawing goes global. In other words, any change to its coordinates or style will immediately reflect on all charts sharing it.
ONLY drawings belonging to charts (i.e. drawings having a chart as reference object) can be shared. If a drawing belongs to an indicator, it CANNOT be shared (see Volume Ladder case).
If you have doubts about the reference object of a drawing, access the configuration window.
Share a drawing #
You can share a drawing in one of the following ways:
- Right click on drawing > Attach to > select the sharing level
- or from drawing configuration window > Attach to > select the sharing level
Sharing levels #
You can choose the sharing level of a drawing:
- Reference Object: drawing is NOT shared and belongs ONLY to the reference chart
- Chart Window: drawing is shared with all charts of the same instrument in the same chart window
- Chart Group: drawing is shared with all charts of the same instrument in the same Chart-Group
- Workspace: drawing is shared with all charts of the same instrument in the same Workspace
- Selected Workspaces: drawing is shared with all charts of the same instrument only in the Selected Workspaces
- All Workspaces: drawing is shared with all charts of the same instrument in all Workspaces (global sharing)
Sharing level is automatically added to the drawing name using a suffix:
CW = Chart Window
CG = Chart Group
WS = Workspace
SWS = Selected Workspaces
GLB = Global (All Workspaces)
Example: By sharing Trendline #1 at the workspace level, its name becomes Trendline (WS) #1.
Modify a shared drawing #
You can modify a drawing from any charts sharing it. However, to change the coordinates, we recommend you always use the chart with the best resolution. For example, if a drawing is shared by 2 charts with 1-minute and 30-minute resolution, change drawing coordinates in 1-minute resolution chart. This is to have the maximum possible precision in the calculation/synchronization of drawing coordinates in all charts sharing it. In horizontal drawings such as horizontal-lines or horizontal-channels, you can ignore this advice.
To change coordinates of a shared drawing, we recommend you always use the chart with the best resolution.
Unshare a drawing #
You can unshare a drawing in one of the following ways:
- Right click on drawing > Attach to > select Reference Object
- or from drawing configuration window > Attach to > select Reference Object
Once the share is removed, drawing will only belong to the chart where you performed the remove command.
Shared drawings maintenance #
You can share up to 1000 drawings. Once the limit is reached, in order to be able to share a new drawing you will need to delete or remove the share from an existing drawing.
For a massive or selective deletion of shared drawings, you can use the Drawing Tool Maintenance window accessible from:
Chart window > press Maintenance button at the top right of the window bar > Drawing Tools Maintenance
Frequently Asked Questions #
I shared a drawing but I do not see it on one or more charts #
- Check sharing level: for example, if you shared a drawing at Chart-Group level, you will only see it in the charts contained in the same Chart-Group!
- Drawing is shared only with charts of the same instrument, not with all charts without distinction!
- Make sure drawing coordinates are included in the X-axis of all charts sharing it. In other words, date/time of coordinates must exist in the chart X-axis. To avoid problems of this type, we recommend you initially share and then change drawing coordinates always from chart with the best resolution, making sure to draw the drawing inside the chart (without going beyond last bar). You can also try to change the Right Margin on charts by adding more bars.
I am NOT able to share a drawing belonging to Volume Ladder indicator #
It is not possible to share drawings belonging to indicators. A drawing to be shared MUST belong to a chart.
Volume Ladder is a special case: when you add Volume Ladder indicator to a chart, the chart is automatically hidden to avoid overlapping and confusion. For this reason, when you draw a drawing on Volume Ladder, it does NOT belong to the instrument chart (because it is hidden), but to the Volume Ladder.
To overcome this problem, you have several solutions. Let’s see the two main ones:
Solution 1:
1) Make the instrument chart visible (by pressing the eye-icon button on Status-Line)
2) Right click on chart window > Foreground Reference Object > select the chart
3) Draw the drawing and share it
4) Make the chart invisible again (by pressing the eye-icon button on Status-Line)
Solution 2:
1) Access chart properties > Style tab
2) Select Draw Chart property
3) Set Opacity of the entire object property to 1 (in this way the chart will be practically invisible even if present)
4) Confirm changes and exit the configuration window
5) Right click on chart window > Foreground Reference Object > select the chart
6) Draw the drawing and share it
Unlike solution-1, solution-2 is final. Steps 1 to 5 only need to be performed 1 time. On the other hand, solution-2 engages the graphic refresh more.
